How to Get Engagement on Social Media
Ingrain Social Media Tip of the Day #14
Create highly relatable content that connects with people and stops them in the busy newsfeed
The top questions I get asked are; 1. How do I get more followers? 2. How do I get more engagement on social media?
Here’s the deal… There is no “hack” or magic unicorn that will instantly grow your following and get you more engagement on social media, but there are techniques and strategies you can put to work for you.
People want to connect with other people, which is exactly why Facebook added reactions (love, laugh, wow, cry, and angry) to the “Like” button. This gives people the ability to express their emotions when a story evokes different feelings.
Most people connect with news feed items coming directly from close friends or family and your business is competing with these posts for attention and engagement. It is especially difficult to capture attention and engagement when there are trending topics or busy times of the year such as holiday season…
Instead of trying to create content that you THINK people want to see like sales, cute photos, and random videos. Create highly relatable, emotional, human-interest content that will connect with people, capture their interest, evoke emotion, or make them laugh.
Facebook refers to this type of content as “thumb-stopping”. Content that makes you stop your thumb, mid-scroll.
Pro Tip: Your goal is to have your audience to see a post and think, “Hey, that’s me, too!”
This can be done by highlighting emotional stories and sharing personal details. It can also be done by sharing causes close to the heart or writing about something important to you. Regardless of the type of content (photo, video, etc.), you decide to share, make sure you dig deep and are willing to put yourself out there and allow people to connect with your brand.
How to Engage People on Social Media
Talk about local events your business might be participating in. Events that you support or sponsor. Even things happening locally that you are just really passionate about, anything that will get your local audience excited about what you’re sharing. This may include, volunteering, company benefits or nonprofit sponsorships. These kinds of things are all great, local content.
A lot of people miss this and it seems obvious, but telling YOUR story, the story of your business. Every business, entrepreneur or owner has a unique story. It can be how your business was built, or the unique challenges you’ve had. Did you go through the recession of ’08/’09 and have some unique struggles or a victory come out of it? We want to hear about what makes you and your business great, and this is an awesome way to allow people to really get an emotional connection with you and that’s going to build lifelong followers, people that genuinely support what you’re doing because they feel like they’re a part of it because you trusted them enough to share that with them.
Most businesses have a particular niche that they are a part of. Whether it’s a product niche or a service niche, there’s probably something that you do within your niche that’s unique or different or adds value, and people won’t know that unless you step out of the box and tell them about it. So, thinking niche and talking about what you’re doing uniquely within your niche is a great way to connect with people and to show them that you’re doing something different.
This is my favorite, and I love to do this online especially on Instagram and Facebook. People are just going through their day waiting for something to come along and breathe life into what they’re doing, or to connect with them. So, inspiring people is such an amazing way to really create a heart-to-heart connection with somebody and you can do that through quotes, you can do that talking about your unique struggles and challenges when you talk about how you overcame them… Whatever way you’re comfortable doing that. It’s going to be unique for you, and it’s going to actually help people to connect with you even more. We can all use a little more inspiration, especially in social media!
Another one of my favorite ways to connect with people on the internet is to educate people. There’s something you are doing right now that not everybody knows how to do, or understands how it’s done. Taking a few minutes to educate people following you will go a long way. This could be explaining your processes, explaining your customer service or introducing your employees. Educating people on your business or even how something is made or what goes on behind-the-scenes are all ways that you can uniquely educate your audience.
This is a great one! If you’re funny, be funny. If you’re really good at creating great artistic images or drawings, anything that’s going to make people feel entertained… do that! As long as it fits within your brand and your business and what you’re doing online.
It’s important to be authentic to your business and dig really deep into what is unique about you. People want authenticity and they want you to be REAL. Do this, and you’ll always win!
