You are More Important Than Your Interaction on Social Media
Ingrain Social Media Tip of the Day #11
You are NOT the sum of likes, comments, and shares you receive on social media. Nor is your business.
This is a topic that I don’t get to discuss much but is something close to my heart. I have been a professional social media marketer since 2012, during which I have ridden many social media waves, platforms, and trends. Throughout it all, one thing has never changed; the emphasis on engagement and interaction on social media.
We can easily get wrapped up in the numbers… How many people like our page, who shared our posts, or how many people are interacting with us in general?
From a business perspective, this makes sense. Not only does it justify the cost of managing these platforms in both dollars and time, it gives us tangible “proof” that our efforts aren’t wasted.
The problem comes when we try to define our worth in terms of social media engagement.
Although there is something to be said for social proof, In the grand scheme of life your social media engagement is arbitrary and lacks importance on the highest level.
You are NOT the sum of likes, comments, and shares you receive on social media. Nor is your business.
If you look to social media engagement as the indication of whether your business idea is great, your product is worthwhile, or to place value on your own self-worth, don’t! Your worth is not defined by the interaction you receive online.
Social media engagement is an ebb and flow indicator of performance that rewards the consistent and can be an uphill battle for the newbies.
So, regardless of the number of likes, comments, or shares you receive, keep on trucking… Even when it feels like you’re talking to yourself.
